Obituary for Sara Elizabeth Johnson Lake
Sarah Elizabeth (Liz) Johnson Lake, 91, of Greenwood died Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital of natural causes. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. December 16, 2017, at Evergreen Cemetery, North Carrollton, MS. Mrs. Lake was a current resident of Indywood Personal Care and previously lived in Diamond Head, Mississippi.
Mrs. Lake was born in McCarley, Mississippi, on April 10, 1926. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles (Chuck) Leslie Lake, father, Thomas Loyd Johnson, mother, Pearl Lynn Neal Johnson, brother, Thomas Neal Johnson, sister, Nell Johnson Holman and niece, Patricia Holman Sterling. She is survived by her nieces, Stephanie Holman Provine of North Carrollton, MS and Tyra Johnson Pirtle (Winston) of Birmingham, AL. Mrs. Lake also leaves surviving great nephews, Michael Joe Carpenter of Carrollton, MS, Neal Winston Pirtle of Birmingham, AL, great niece, Madora Adele Pirtle of Birmingham, AL, dear friend and caregiver, Georgia Swinney of Itta Bena, MS.
Mrs. Lake’s siblings, nieces and family fondly referred to her as “Laba” a nickname bestowed by her brother when she was a toddler.
Mrs. Lake was a graduate of J.Z. George High School where she was Valedictorian of her senior class. Following high school she worked at the military base in Greenwood, Mississippi before moving to work at the U.S. Army Air Force in Biloxi, MS. Mrs. Lake lived in many states throughout her life as she accompanied her husband, in his career as a geologist to, New Orleans, LA, Florida, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Denver, Colorado, Ventura, California before moving to Diamond Head, Mississippi later in her life. After 21 years of service with the Department of the Interior, National Parks Service, Mrs. Lake retired in April 1988.
Mrs. Lake was an avid and accomplished golfer, playing whenever time allowed. Over the course of her U.S. amateur career she won many awards and championships including the WSWGA Southern California Championship. Mrs. Lake was commonly known as ‘the putting queen’. She held various roles throughout her golf career with her last being WSWGA President of Saticoy Country Club, Venture, CA.
