Quinten James Beattie, age 96, passed away Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Indywood Glen in Greenwood, MS with family by his side. Quinten was born in Shelby, NC and graduated from nearby Waco H.S. During World War II, he served in the 44th Division of the 7th Army, achieved the rank of Sergeant and was severely wounded in combat near Strasbourg, France. He was a long-time resident of Northwest Indiana where he relocated the family to seek employment and eventually retired from Inland Steel. Quinten enjoyed gardening and raised a bounty of various vegetables. He was a fisherman and excelled at bowling, at one time scoring a perfect 300 Tournament Game. He was a dedicated husband of 67 years to his beloved wife, Beatrice (Crosby) Beattie. Both were faithful members of First Baptist Church in Lake Station, IN and raised their three children by their Christian beliefs and example.

Quinten is survived by two sons: Ralph and his wife Penny (Nixon) of Lake Station, IN; Richard and his wife Christie (Kamos) of Greenwood, MS; and daughter Rhonda and her husband Larry Orange of Chesterton, IN. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Susan (Beattie) Bohlen, Josh Beattie, Dennis and Kevin Orange, Jobi (Orange) Szumlas and her husband, Ed Szumlas. He is survived by eleven great-grandchildren: Alex (wife Emily), Matthew, Nicholas, Declan and Annabelle Beattie; Jasmine McGaughy; Rhyan (wife Eva), Jacob (wife Calli) and Kala Pawlicki; Domminick and Bryce Orange; and two great-great grandchildren, Maddison Pawlicki and Evelyn Beattie.

Quinten was preceded in death by his wife, Bea; parents Peter Cleveland Beattie and Mary (Barrett) Beattie; brothers Robert “Leo”, Enos, Amos, Lemuel and Zeno; sisters Lona and Margaret; and grandson Bill Beattie.

The family invites relatives and friends to pay their respects at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home at 6941 Central Ave, Portage, IN on Friday, April 20 from 4-8pm. The funeral will be held Saturday, April 21 at 9:30am followed by a graveside service at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso, IN. Pastor Dave Nykamp officiates.

Due to the funeral services being held at a distant location, the Richard, Christie and Josh Beattie family will welcome friends to First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood for a reception in the church parlor from 4-6pm on Tuesday, April 17.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Quinten’s memory to the U.S. military veterans association of your choice.
