Obituary for George Wilson Garrison, Jr

Greenwood, MS: George W. Garrison, Jr. 75, passed away suddenly Thursday, November 30, 2017 at his home. Funeral services are 11A.M. Monday December 4, 2017 at Greenwood Funeral Home with interment in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrolton. Dr. Joe Pate and Rev. Charlie Jones, Jr. will officiate.

George was born in Booneville, MS to George and Syblel Garrison, Sr. and grew up in the Buena Vista Community near Ripley. He graduated from Buena Vista High School where he was the state and national 4-H Swine Record winner in 1961 and the 1963 state 4-H achievement record winner. He graduated from MS State University with a B.S. in Animal Science and received his Masters of Science degree in Swine Nutrition from the University of Kentucky. While at MSU he was a charter member of the Farm House Fraternity, was a member of the Alpha Zeta Fraternity, the Block & Bridle Club, 4-H Club and Baptist Student Union. He received the Merit Trophy Award from the Block & Bridle Club as the outstanding senior in Animal Science.

In 1965, George began working as the Leflore County Extension 4-H Livestock Agent. He received the Dixie National Livestock Show premier exhibit award for outstanding 4-H exhibit 15 years in a row. Additional rewards he received were the Paul Newell Award for the best 4-H beef program in MS, the MS Pork Producers association outstanding extension agent award, the Block & Bridle Club agricultural extension award, the MS association county agricultural agents distinguished service award, and the MS county agents association outstanding 4-H youth agent award. He retired as an agent in 1992.

He was an active member of First Baptist church where he served as director of the adult 3 Sunday school dept. and was a deacon for Calvary Baptist church where he formerly attended. He served as a volunteer Chaplain at Parchman and Delta Correctional facility for 33 years.

George is survived by his wife of 47 years, Stella Burchfield Garrison, a daughter; Gina Caldwell (John) of Spokane, WA, a son; Jon Garrison (Kelly) of Thompson Station, TN and five grandchildren; John Thomas Caldwell, Sicily Caldwell, Olivia Caldwell, Isaiah Garrison and Noah Garrison.

Pallbearers will be John Harville, Baird Moor, Mark Crenshaw, Jeff Harden, Richie Fulgham, Robbie Wilson, George Gillespie and John Carl Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Geeslin, Charlie Jones and Dr. Charles Nause.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5 P.M. At the Funeral Home.

George WAS Leflore County 4-H. he had such an impact on so many kids and their families. He treated each of us as if we were his kids and his main concern. There will never be another like him. True leader.

Stella, Jon and Gina - I am so sorry this has happened. Just always remember I love your family so much. George will be missed by so many. He was the first boss I had when I went to MS State Extension Service and was always so good to me.

Stella I just received this notice that your husband had passed away. I am so sorry for you and ur family's loss. I wished I lived closer to you but guess we will always be here in th NE GA mountains. We love the mountains and love the beauty here. JIm is not in good health which is hard but he does the best he can do. SEnd me ur address and telephone so we can keep in touch!!!!!
