James E Hughes

James E Hughes, age 93, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at the Golden Age Nursing Home.

Graveside services are 11 A.M. Friday at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Carrollton Ave. Rev. Ed McDaniel will officiate, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 29.

James was born in Shellmound, Mississippi on December 23, 1923 to Gertrude Johnson Hughes and W. D. Hughes, he graduated from Greenwood high school in 1941 and was drafted in 1943 into the U.S. Army. He was inducted at Camp Shelby, MS, trained at Fort McKinley Texas, and was assigned to the 700th EPD Co. serving as a medic. Mr. Hughes was stationed for two years in India during the China/ Burma campaign, where his engineering unit laid pipelines to allow allied planes to “fly the hump”. Upon returning to the states, he continued his education at Mississippi State University where he received a degree in business management. After graduation Mr. Hughes met Margaret Olen Word of Coila and were married in May of 1952. Mr. Hughes worked as credit manager for B. F. Goodrich tire and Butane Gas Company. He continued his career in accounting when he joined the firm of Walker Middleton Tucker and Armstrong in the late 60s early 70s (now known as BFMW).  He continued to work and go to the office daily into his late 80’s. James also helped Margaret with her antique business and would often be seen at “The Corner Collection” store on the weekends. Mr. Hughes was an active member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood, where he served as a deacon for many years and taught Sunday school until he was no longer physically able. Mr. Hughes was an active member of the American Legion Post 29 and was very involved in veterans’ activities at local schools. He enjoyed telling students of his service experiences first hand and said it was important to hear stories firsthand from the “greatest generation”. Many students wrote essays about Mr. Hughes’s experiences for class projects.  As a member of American Legion Post 29, Mr. Hughes served on the honor guard for veteran burials and also served as an honorary Chaplin. Mr. Hughes, his dedication to his faith, family, and country, will always be remembered by those who knew him and crossed his path. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William, David and Walton Hughes.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret, two sons James E. “Jimmy” Hughes Jr. (Sandra) of Hattiesburg and Robert C. “Bobby” Hughes of St. Louis Missouri, four grandchildren, Margo Cook (Shane), and Julie Hughes of St. Louis. Brad Hughes (Erin) of Crystal Springs and Reagan Cooper (Nathan) of Brandon and three great grandchildren, Mary Reagan Cooper, Christina Hartwell Cooper and Hayden Charles Hughes as well as several cousins.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4-6 P.M. at Greenwood Funeral Home.

Memorials can be made to American Legion Post 29 or the First Baptist Church of Greenwood 500 W. Washington, Greenwood, MS  38930.

A further issue is that video games usually are serious as the name indicated with the primary focus on mastering rather than entertainment. Although, it comes with an entertainment aspect to keep your children engaged, each one game is usually designed to work with a specific group of skills or curriculum, such as mathmatical or research. Thanks for your post.
